Let The Horse Races Begin: Lone Star Park

Outside of the Kentucky Derby, not a whole lot of people follow horse racing. In all honesty, that’s a real shame. Horse racing is some of the most thrilling entertainment you can find, and it’s fun for the whole family. You don’t even have to know anything about it to enjoy it – just show up, pick a horse with a cool name, and cheer your heart out.

Again, most people associate horse racing with the Triple Crown. But there are so many other events that go on year round, and one track is located just a few minutes outside Fort Worth. Lone Star Park, in Grand Prairie, offers world class horse racing for a great admission price.

Lone Star has races every Thursday-Saturday from now through November 15, all with some of the best thoroughbreds around. The dirt track is a mile long, with a seven furlough long turf track on the inside. The relatively short distances provide for incredibly intense racing, and since the park is cozy in size, every fan will have a great view of the action.

Kids under the age of 3 get in for free, and it’s only $5 for everyone else. There’s also the chance to place your bets and win big betting on a long-shot pony to win, place, or show. The Lone Star website offers a great guide for those looking to get into betting on horses.

In between races, there are tons of great attractions at the track. For just a few bucks more you can get entry into the clubhouse, and enjoy a shaded view of the action. There are also three great racing-themed restaurants located inside the stadium, so there’s certainly no excuse to go hungry while you’re there.

Next Thursday will be Senior Citizen Discount Day at the stadium, so anyone over 62 years old gets in for free.

Saturday, October 25 will be a Breeder’s Cup Preview Party, during which expert analysts will offer their opinions on one of the biggest races of the year and the first 200 attendees will get a free Breeder’s Cup preview book. If you feel like sticking around, the famous Lone Star Park sports bar “Bar and Book”will be showing UFC 179 at 10 pm, so anyone who wants a full day of sports outside of football and baseball can get all their entertainment in one convenient spot!

Horse racing is a great activity for the whole family (who doesn’t love racing and horses?), and citizens of Fort Worth are lucky to have such a quality track so close to home. Next time you’re looking for a family day on a weekend, head on over to Lone Star Park and pick yourself a winner!
